Department 56 began in 1976 with the introduction of six hand-painted lighted ceramic buildings… the first pieces of The Original Snow Village. As this collection continued to grow, so did their company. Today Department 56 offers many different Village series. 1 – Porcelain House with UL Listed Light Cord; 1 Porcelain Sign, Limited Edition, Now RETIRED 2000 Fresh Fallen Snow, Frosted Topiary Trees and Village Cobblestone Road (sold separately) Historical Landmark Series – While new buildings are necessary additions to Department 56′s already existing cities and countrysides, there’s something to be said about the tried and true. With this in mind Historical Landmark Series was started in 1997. Landmark buildings are important parts of our history, culture, and architecture. They impress us with their unique visual appeal, architectural excellence, and by withstanding the passage of time. Though none of us can see every landmark in the world with our own eyes, we can appreciate them because of the role they play in history. From housing royal jewels to keeping time for the world, each historical landmark is a treasure to behold. The Heritage Village Collection: The Heritage Village Collection includes several lighted Village series, each with its own distinctive style. Each piece is handcrafted of porcelain, individually hand painted, and characterized by the matte finish. Extensive research contributes to the charm and detail of each piece. Cast into the mold is the Department 56 logo — a guarantee of authenticity. Every year pieces are retired from production and the molds broken. This limites the number of pieces and allows for new additions. Special pieces often are created for the various Villages. These include limited editions, each adding to the unique character of the Village and capturing the imagination. The Dickens’ Village Series – Step back in time to the cobblestone streets, gas street lamps, and horse-drawn carriages of our 19th century Dicken’s Village Series. Revel in the bustling, hearty, and joyous atmosphere found in the holiday season of Victorian England. This series, introduced in 1984, has many pieces inspired by best-loved Dickens’ novels, like Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. With old-world churches, quaint shops, cozy cottages, rustic schools, and more, the series portrays London and the surrounding countryside as it was during Dickens’ lifetime.
